Making Cakes for Dogs
Hot New Trend

More and more folks are making cakes for dogs – be it in the dog treat business as part of their bakery expansion or individual dog owners wanting to do something special for their dogs. Dog cakes are fast becoming a huge growing trend in the dog treat arena.

As we are in the dog treat business, we wanted to make sure that you were up to speed on this exciting new trend. Baking cakes for dogs is a little different than baking for people. The biggest difference that you will notice as you are researching dog cakes is the minimal use of sugar for dog cakes. While many folks want to treat their dog – they are wise to limit the sugar. As you are preparing to bake your dog cake, think about alternatives to adding straight sugar. If you come across a great cake recipe – you can easily modify it for dogs often by removing the sugar completely and replacing a little of the water with some honey.

We give our Sammy a little of or original dog treat icing mixes on occasion because he loves it – but we make sure to keep manage his intake because of the sugar. We give him more treats with our sugar free icing, naturally because it doesn’t contain sugar. When I started baking cakes, I thought about what would be best for Sammy. I looked at several of the dog cake products that are on the market and realized that they were just basically a wheat flour base with some leavening and either sugar or honey powder. I was not excited by this. So if you have been reading on the site, you know that when I am dissatisfied with what is available on the market, I just make my own solution!!! The challenge with baking cakes for dogs as part of your business is the shelf life. It is very different from baking dog treats with low moisture. Most of the folks that we see baking cakes as part of their business model are baking to order. From a food safety standpoint we support this as a cake with no preservatives especially with a yogurt based frosting at room temperature for several days could be disastrous. We highly recommend baking cakes to order so that they are fresh. We also recommend storing your baked cakes either in the freezer or refrigerated until you are ready to use it. We are always looking for something new and different, and as part of our baking cakes for dogs adventure we looked into developing a dog cake mix that is

1. Easy to use

2. Contains no wheat, no soy, no sugar, no artificial sweeteners, and no hydrogenated fats

3. Complete – contains the cake mix and the frosting mix (also easy to use).

So, we wanted to share with you our new doggie cake kit. Easy to use dog cake mix with frosting mix included makes baking cakes for dogs so easy. Simply add water (and a little oil) to the cake mix, bake and then decorate with the easy to mix yogurt frosting mix (just add water). A cake mix you can feel good about.
