A dog icing activity with teenagers? Seriously?
That’s what I thought. Recently I visited my family, and among them was my 16 year old nephew. As many of you may know – finding ways to connect with teens can be a major challenge. I had brought along some of the Everything Dog Treats dog icing products to show everyone all that we have been working on. I asked “Would any one like to decorate some dog treats?”
My nephew said “Sure,” in the standard teen indifferent tone.
So I began the process of preparing the coatings. My newphew started asking questions - "what's in it? Can you eat it?" And in true teen fashion, while his interest was obvious, he pretended to be disinterested. I didn’t have any fresh baked treats, but my mom had some commercial treats. So, I mixed up some icing, filled some disposable piping bags. It took about 10 minutes to prepare
pink, blueberry, carob, and some plain yogurt dog treat coatings.
The next thing I knew – the entire family was totally absorbed with decorating the dog treats. I stood back and was amazed. They were loving being able to get creative.
Every now and then I would demonstrate a new technique and a whole new level of activity would ensue. It was fantastic!!! And I realized that kids and dogs are natural allies, and wanting to do something special for our dogs is almost a universal desire. Combining kids and dogs in one activity – decorating dog treats with the kids was an amazing way of bringing the entire family together. The really great thing, and I kept saying to everyone – there is no wrong way to do this – even the “mistakes” are edible with dog treat icing!
Now some of you gourmet dog treat bakers may be panicking at the thought of people decorating their own dog treats with dog icing. Have no fear. This activity isn’t for everyone – many folks would rather purchase a gorgeous treat than go through the effort of a dog treat activity. In the hustle and bustle of today, this is an activity that would only occur on occasion. The day to day need for your beautiful treats will always be there! (And, just a thought – maybe you might want to assemble your own dog treat decorating kits that include your own fresh baked dog treats with some of our dog icing.)
Things that made the activity a hit were:
1. How easy it was to prepare the decorations – add water, mix, fill the piping bags and you are ready (less than 15 minutes of prep time).
2. It was colorful.
3. Everyone felt good about making something for the family dogs. There was real excitement at the thought of giving the treats to the puppies.
4. There was no wrong way to do it – we kept laughing at the “ugly” ones and saying “yeah, but Sammy will love it!”
5. We used regular commercial dog treats – and made them look fabulous. You could use milk bones, or Newman’s Own dog treats – it didn’t matter.
6. The clean up was easy – we just washed a couple of bowls, and threw away the disposable piping bags.
Now naturally I’m kicking myself for not having had a camera handy to take pictures. But I seriously didn’t have any idea that it was going to turn into this amazing family festival of dog treats. Order some
dog icing and have some family fun
decorating dog treats with your family. A great dog craft idea for you and the kids!
