Low calorie dog treats?
How about ZERO calorie treat alternatives!

Low calorie dog treats? Think about this for a minute. When we think of dog treats, the first thing that comes to mind are those tasty morsels we love to feed our pets. We love to give our dogs those delicious snacks or crunchy chews and watch them get super excited.

But consider this first - dog obesity is on the rise. And unfortunately those wonderful snacks and treats are a major contributor to this disease. We may even choose low calorie dog treats in an attempt to keep the weight off our beloved pup. But when we give our dogs treats too often, or too many of them - regardless of calorie content - we may be unknowingly adding those damaging pounds to our friends.

We have provided you information on treating including recommended amounts, calories associated with common dog treat brands, and the basic information on your dog's daily caloric needs.

We wanted to also provide you with some low calorie dog treats alternatives that we believe will be well received by your furry friend. Consider some of the ideas below. Perhaps they will spark some zero calorie options of your own. Either way, these alternatives to food rewards are a healthy option for expressing your love and affection for your pet.

--> Brushing your dog - even for 5 to 10 minutes. What a great way to show your love. I guarentee the moment your dog sees the brush he or she gets just as excited as when they hear the treat jar open.

--> An extra walk in the morning or evening, outside of his/her normal routine.

--> A Special play time - set aside 5 to 10 mintues to roll around and play with your dog with his favorite play toy.

--> Break the house rules (just this once) - How about letting your dog jump up on the couch, or cuddle in bed with you (if they aren't normally allowed).

--> A Leash free run - in an approved park or open area away from traffic.

--> A car ride. How many times have you seen a happy hound riding down the rode with their head hanging out the window, soaking up all the smells? Quite the treat!!!

--> A visit to a friend's house who has a dog. Let the dogs romp and play, while you enjoy a nice cup of coffee. This is great especially if you only have one dog.

Any of these "low calorie dog treats" are a great "treat" substitute for your dog. And the upside - most of these activities will get you and your pup moving and help keep those unwanted doggie pounds away. It is well known that quality time spent with pets is proven to reduce stress and blood pressure in humans. Not only will you be making your dog VERY happy, providing a healthy alternative to food treats... you'll be doing yourself some good too!
